Workplace Massage Bringing remedial therapies to your work environment

With 27% of all work-related ill health attributed to work-related musculoskeletal disorders, resulting in 6.6 million working days lost in 2022/23 [source], workplace massage can provide a proactive solution, improving outcomes for both employee and employer alike.

Workplace massage involves shortened sessions of massage, taking place in the office to give colleagues greater accessibility and flexibility around their schedules, balancing the importance of a well-earned break without intruding on their workday commitments.  An investment in a wellbeing programme may not only offer benefits to an individual’s physical and mental health, but enhance workplace relations in promoting a culture of support.

Considerations

  • How often would the office like a visit? Consider the size of the company and the demand, but fortnightly or monthly visits are a popular choice, to give everyone an opportunity.

    Frequency of visits

  • Is there a certain day or date i.e Fridays or the 1st of the month that would work better for visits? Consistency can help colleagues plan their schedules, but the next visit can always be agreed ad hoc.

    Set dates/days

  • Would a designated amount of time for each session such as 30 minutes be better or would allowing a colleague to select from a range of options when booking be preferred?

    Session duration

  • All therapy styles are available for office visits. Is there an interest in one particular style or will offering colleagues the range be better?

    Which style?

  • It will need to be private to preserve modesty and encourage a disconnection from the surrounds as well as an ambient temperature. This could be a first aid room or a meeting room where windows and portholes can be obscured.

    Set up space

  • Will there be a single point of contact within the office for colleagues to liaise with to book in a slot or should they contact me directly? A single point of contact may initially help until staff feel comfortable with the process.

    Administration

  • Are the company looking to fund these sessions in part or whole, or will colleagues pay themselves? Colleagues paying for themselves could pay direct or this could be collated by the administrator of these sessions.

    Payment

  • Where colleagues are paying for themselves, timing visits around pay day sees a greater uptake.

  • If you are looking for a massage therapist who will provide a massage based on what areas require attention, then Mel is the person to go to. For the time she has been coming to our workplace, where I have received fortnightly massages, each massage has been right on the money, concentrating on my problem areas each time and leaving me feeling relaxed and less tense.
